There are just so many things going on in this crazy world right now, I am having a hard time processing it all. In fact, I had all the intention to write a post or two last week but every time I sat at the computer to write, I stared at the blank screen and struggled to put my thoughts into words.
So much evil, so much hatred, so much injustice.
How is one to cope with all of this? How do I respond?
Most, importantly, what is my role in this tragedy stricken world?
I am glad I am not left to struggle with these questions on my own, and that I can turn to God for comfort and guidance.
Since I have a feeling I am not the only one struggling, I decided to share these thoughts with you. Here are a few Bible verses that have helped me to refocus over the last few days:
“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” I John 4:16 NIV (Emphasis Added)
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12 NIV (Emphasis added)
“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed […]” Isaiah 1:17a NIV (Emphasis added)
“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” I John 4:20-21 NIV (Emphasis Added)
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9 NIV (Emphasis added)
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” Luke 6:27-28 NIV (Emphasis Added)
“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others?” Matthew 5:44-47 NIV (Emphasis Added)
“And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8 NIV (Emphasis added)
As I read these verses I was reminded of my calling: to do good, to defend the oppressed, to be a blessing in the lives of others, to make peace, to pray for those who hurt me, and, most importantly, to LOVE. This is not a calling for a passive role as a mere spectator, it is a call to be active in the service of others.
May God grant me strength to fulfill this calling and, at a time when hatred and evil seem to reign, may I always choose to fight this battle on the side of LOVE.
